Dear Editor,
I’m from the United States, and I wanted to tell you how amazing I’ve found your website.
My ancestors left Notranjska before the First World War, and this website has been so helpful to me in learning about their history and culture. My family has forgotten a lot of this history in the last century and a half, and websites like Stare slike are one of the most accessible ways to rediscover it. Your website has also been very useful for learning about what happened to the family they left behind when they came to the US.
The articles about Novi Kot, Stari Kot, and the atrocities the Italians committed there during the Second World War were very moving for me. My great grandfather grew up in Novi Kot, and he left in 1914. None of the family in the US had any idea of the horrors that his siblings and mother (all of whom remained in Novi Kot) experienced until I read your website; their homes were burnt down and they were deported to the concentration camp on Rab. This discovery has had a strong emotional impact on me, and I am so grateful that, thanks to Stare slike, I could find out about it at all.
Thank you for all your hard work in maintaining and publishing this website!
Sincerely,
Joseph Egleston

Joey Engleston’s great-grandfather left Novi Kot in 1914. In the postcard kindly scanned for us by the Regional Museum of Kočevje, Novi Kot appears roughly as it was at the time of his departure.
